Wits University

WITS UNIVERSITY

The origins of Wits lie in the South African School of Mines, which was established in Kimberley in 1896 and transferred to Johannesburg as the Transvaal Technical Institute in 1904, becoming the Transvaal University College in 1906 and renamed the South African School of Mines and Technology four years later.

Spread over more than 100 hectares, Wits University is an urban, comprehensive university with the most diverse student body in South Africa. Wits has a distinctive capacity to contribute to the reconstruction and development of South Africa through research and the production of skilled, critical and adaptable graduates. With its more than 100 000 graduates in its 83- year history, Wits has made and will continue to make its mark nationally and internationally.

Wits has an interesting history in relation to South African’s shifting politics. From the 1940s onwards, it attempted to function as an ‘open’ university in the face of the Nationalist Government and its apartheid policies. The 60s, 70s and 80s were turbulent years fro Wits during which confrontations between the University and the nationalist Government were frequent. At the present time, Wits is attempting to play a role in the reconstruction of South Africa, in strengthening both its skills base and its commitment to democracy.

The fundamental role of any university is to promote freedom of enquiry and the search for knowledge and truth. Wits has built a reputation for itself in this role, establishing itself at the industrial and commercial heart of South Africa as a centre for education and research of the highest quality. Its mission is to build on this foundation in a way that takes account of its responsibilities within South Africa today; and to maintain and enhance its position as a leading university in South Africa, in Africa, and in the world by sustaining globally competitive standards of excellence in learning, teaching and research.

Wits has approximately 25 000 students and conferred 4000 degrees last year.

Here are some interesting points about the universities many achievements and status.

  • Wits has twelve‘A-rated’ scientists (based on a stringent evaluation of an individual scientist’s research record over five years). These scientists are international leaders in their disciplines.
  • Wits is home to one of the largest fossil collections in the Southern Hemisphere. New species of animals are being discovered due to its groundbreaking research efforts in this field.
  • The Wits Business School was ranked 45th globally in the Financial Times annual Executive Education rankings in May 2003. This was the first time in history that an African business school was ranked among the top business schools in the world by the Financial Times in the United Kingdom.
  • To date Wits has produced 88 Rhodes Scholars - six in the last four years. Only a limited number of these coveted scholarships are awarded to outstanding students worldwide.
  • Wits has produced four Nobel Prize laureates - Nelson Mandela (Peace), Aaron Klug (Chemistry), Sydney Brenner (Medicine) and Nadine Gordimer (Literature).
  • Our undergraduate engineering degrees are recognised by the Engineering Council of South Africa. In terms of the Washington Accord signed in June 2000, of which South Africa is a signatory, official recognition of our degree programmes has been approved by the professional engineering accrediting bodies in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Ireland and Hong Kong.
